What is Kids CAN Build?
Kids CAN Build, formerly Canstruction of the Southern Tier, is a community event that raises awareness about hunger, where teams of school students compete to design and build giant structures made out of full cans of food.
Where will it take place?
Unlike Canstruction of the Southern Tier, which took place in the Oakdale Mall, the Kids CAN Build event will take place within various school buildings. We will then tie all of the groups’ efforts together with a celebration ceremony at one TBD location, showing photos and/or videos of all the structures.
Who backs this event?
The Broome Leadership Institute (BLI) Alumni Association Board and its Kids CAN Build committee facilitate this event through their connection with
the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce. Experienced committee members are available to mentor students as they design, build and plan the logistics for their structures. The committee also works to line up sponsorship support for each team, so that all of the cans’ costs are covered and each team gets the same amount of cans.
How will Kids CAN Build benefit Broome County?
All of the cans and proceeds from Kids CAN Build will help support hunger-relief activities in Broome County through the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW), a service of the Broome County Council of Churches. The donated food will be distributed through CHOW to hunger-relief
agencies in Broome County including food pantries, soup kitchens, and community meal programs.
