Agency Background:  The Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce (GBCC) is a nonprofit organization with over 830 business and nonprofit members, serving the region of Broome County, New York. We help organizations of all sizes connect, collaborate, and succeed through education, advocacy, networking, and community involvement.  Our aim is to support the existing local business community and the attraction of new businesses to the region through mem­ber-driven programs and services, the devel­opment of strategic community partnerships and effective political advocacy.  We help to provide organizations with the tools, resources, and an environment for success, empowering growth.  We have several affiliated organizations that promote economic growth through tourism and education including Visit Bing, Greater Binghamton Educational Outreach and Southern Tier Welcome Center.
 
Position Overview:  The Membership Sales and Services Manager is responsible for the sales of new memberships within the Greater Binghamton Chamber as well as retention of existing members. This position implements strategic direction for the organization’s growth within the membership area. The Membership Services Director will assist with the annual planning within the department relating to membership growth, membership retention and sponsorship sales. The position reports to the Sr. Vice President.
 
Performance Responsibilities:
  • Contact, acquire and sell new Chamber memberships to businesses and organizations located throughout Greater Binghamton area
  • Schedule appointments and personal visits with prospective companies
  • Achieve budgeted revenue goals
  • Actively seeks new business leads and follows up as appropriate 
  • Ensure all sales processes are integrated and strategic, support strategic plan objectives, create brand position, adhere to brand standards and an effective expenditure of resources
  • Develop objectives and research-based strategies for prospecting businesses
  • Develop research-based strategies for partnerships and the development marketing and sponsorship programs and opportunities 
  • Provide sales skills and expertise to the Chamber’s staff and volunteers by building, developing, leading and managing various teams capable of carrying out the necessary and expected sales strategies and goals
  • Maintain accurate statistics and data on return on investment of marketing programs and efforts, for regular reporting and analysis of sales plan and associated activities and programs
  • Maintain and submit such records or forms as may be required for proper documentation of membership sales activity
  • Cultivate and maintain an extensive knowledge of all Chamber programs, services, initiatives and activities 
  • Closely monitor industry trends and local issues impacting the Chamber’s membership sales efforts
  • Actively support and participate in Chamber events and programs
  • Cultivate relationships in order to upgrade current investment levels with members to higher levels of membership
  • Works renewal accounts and targeted major accounts as assigned 
  • Assists Chamber members in taking full advantage of their membership including participation (attendance and volunteerism) and retention in the Chamber
  • Staff liaison to various sales-based volunteer committees and task forces
  • Represents the Chamber in a professional manner
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by the President of the organization
 
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, business, or related field
  •  Minimum of two years of experience in sales/marketing positions with preference to experience working in the chamber of commerce/association management industry
  • In-depth knowledge of sales functions and customer service oriented principles
  • Proficient in ability to analyze and interpret market research
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively cultivate relationships with prospects, members, volunteers and community stakeholders
  • Excellent selling and closing skills
  • Ability to assess marketing opportunities and develop strategic plans to reach targeted audiences
  • Ability to organize, plan and prioritize workload involving multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively as well as provide solutions
  • Ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences
  • Strategic, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Knowledge and understanding of the business community in the region
  • Must have/maintain a dependable vehicle with proof of license and insurance
  • Some travel and work off-site will be required, as well as occasional work on evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
 
Compensation and Employee Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience and is structured with base plus commission. Other benefits include paid reimbursement of business travel, professional development and training. Position is full-time, salaried, includes company 401k contribution, paid holidays, personal time and vacation, also includes health insurance with a proportionate cost to the employee, dental insurance, long-term and short-term disability and life insurance.
