The Pride and Joy Families Project of Binghamton University will host a Family Fun Day to celebrate the LGBTQ community. This event is free and open to the public. Participants must register by Friday, March 1. The event will feature adult workshops that focus on healing trauma in children and families, navigating schools as an LGBTQ family, self-care, raising transgender and gender non-conforming children, and talking to teens about sex and relationships. There will be ample time for adults to relax and interact, childcare and camp highlight programs for children 3 years and older, and a resource fair. The event is intended to meet the needs of families with one or more lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming or queer members, but all are welcome. Claudia Stallman, Binghamton University project director for the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project, said the event is a great way for the LGBTQ community to unite. “Pride and Joy Families gatherings are a wonderful opportunity for LGBTQ adults and kids and their family members to experience a sense of community, celebrate together, and find the support and resources they need,” she said. The Pride and Joy Families Project is an organization dedicated to supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in Upstate New York. The organization is housed in the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Binghamton University and was founded in April 2000 with a $43,000 competitive grant award for LGBT Health and Human Services. It offers provider trainings, educational programs, information and referral services, a directory of LGBTQ-inclusive services, and support for LGBTQ families and prospective parents. Its large network provides social and educational opportunities and a sense of community to LGBTQ parents and their children. Local families and early arrivals are invited to gather the night before for a pool party at the DoubleTree Hotel at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8.
