In the early 1900s Binghamton Salvation Army officer Major William Turner was given a new assignment from the Salvation Army National Commander: "Go to the front lines of WWI and take care of our boys." Major Turner returned to Binghamton to learn how to make donuts from the Russell Spaulding Company. He took that recipe with him to begin the now famous Salvation Army Donut Brigade. In honor of Binghamton's contribution to this historic effort, The Binghamton Salvation Army will be holding a competition for "Binghamton's Best Donut." This event will be held Friday, June 7th during the First Friday Art Walk. Local donut makers will enter their donuts from their own recipes to try to win the coveted award of "Binghamton's Best Donut." The general public out to attend First Friday Art Walk venues will be the judges who taste each donut sample them and pick their favorate. The donut with the most votes will be the winner.
